EXHIBITION IN ST LAURENCE’S CHURCH AND CHURCH ROOMS
FRIDAY 1ST JULY, SATURDAY 2ND JULY AND SUNDAY 3RD JULY, 10AM – 4.00PM
As the nations commemorate the centenary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme, there will be an exhibition about Scalby’s Somme heroes, and the other men on the churchyard war memorial, in the Church Rooms, next to the church. The Church Rooms used to be the village school, attended by several of the men now remembered on the war memorial, when Mr John Tickle was Headmaster. There will also be information about Newby and Scalby in 1914-1921 and artefacts of the period. Over the 3 days experts will be dropping by to share their knowledge and chat to visitors. At the same time there will be an exhibition of commemorative textiles in the church entitled, ‘Threads of War”. For further information please see http://www.1914-18commemorative quilts.com . These commemorative textiles have been displayed in the Royal Armouries in Leeds and Portsmouth, the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough and in many North Yorkshire libraries and churches. They will be coming to Scalby from Bradford Cathedral.
